Brewer's 18 Points Leads Morehouse To 74-69 Win Over Tuskegee In SIAC Opener

ATLANTA, Ga. – Xavier Brewer's 18 points helped lead Morehouse College to a 74-69 victory over Tuskegee University in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon in Forbes Arena.

The Maroon Tigers even up their season record to 3-3, 1-0 SIAC the Golden Tigers fall to 2-4, 0-1 SIAC.

MHC went into the locker with a 44-33 lead after having connected on 18-of-21 attempts from the charity strip.  The Maroon Tigers led for most of the first half and built their lead to 14 before closing out the half with the 11 point lead.

The second half saw Morehouse extend their lead to 19 points at the 12:42 mark when they led 60-41 after the Maroon Tiger trap forced 10 Golden Tiger turnovers that MHC converted to 11 points. Tuskegee would take a 67-66 lead late in the game but was not able to hold on as the Maroon and White had some timely rebounds and hit critical free-throws down the stretch.

Turning Point
After Tuskegee made a run overcoming a 19 point deficit to tie the game at 69-69 with :47 remaining in the game, Devin Russell got a huge offensive rebound on a miss shot and a put back layup with :20 remaining giving Morehouse the lead for good.

Individual Leaders
Morehouse forward Xavier Brewer (Atlanta, GA) led the Maroon Tigers with 18 points, going 7 for 15 from the field and tying with forward Kairo Whitfield (Atlanta, GA) with eight rebounds. Whitfield also contributed 13 points while shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from the field while hitting 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. Guard Devin Russell (Center Point, AL) came off the bench to score 14 points in just 12 minutes including a critical rebound down the stretch that sealed the victory for the Maroon Tigers.

Tuskegee guard James Eads was the competition's leading scorer with 21 points and 8 rebounds while guard Deshawn Millington contributed 17 points and 11 rebounds.
