ATLANTA, Ga. - Morehouse Athletics mourns the loss of longtime supporter and Head of Basketball Operations Joseph Wingfield, Sr., who passed away yesterday at the age of 75.
"The Maroon Tiger family is saddened by the sudden loss of Joseph Wingfield," said Head Basketball Coach,
Grady Brewer. "He has been a tremendous part of our programs success and will leave a lasting legacy. Joseph was not only a colleague but also a friend who volunteered his time and supported our program without ever asking for anything in return. He will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends."
A 1983 graduate of Morehouse College, Wingfield served under Maroon Tiger great, Arthur J. McAfee, Jr. as head of basketball operations from 1981-1987. He rejoined the maroon and white in 2006 as a volunteer under Brewers staff in the same capacity.
Born on April 4, 1945, Wingfield served in the United States Army from 1971-1975 earning the rank of sergeant before being honorably discharged.
Just a few months ago, Wingfield had one of his proudest moments when his grandson, Jordan Walker, was drafted 21st overall in the 2020 MLB draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. Walker credited his introduction to baseball to his grandfather who was his first coach.
