February 5, 2011 – ORANGEBURG, SC – For the second time this season, the Maroon Tigers have knocked off the Claflin University Panthers. In January, Morehouse defeated Claflin 66-65, at Forbes Arena. This time the Tigers beat the Panthers on the road, 70-65.
The win marked the first time Morehouse has won in Orangeburg and the first time the Maroon Tigers have swept Claflin, since the team joined the SIAC in 2007.
Morehouse improved to .500 in the conference, at 7-7 (7-9 overall).
Trading baskets and the lead throughout the first half, the game stayed close, until a three-pointer by #Daniyal Faquir# gave the Tigers a 40-37 half-time advantage and a lead they would not relinquish. Morehouse owned the second half, leading by as many as 14 points.
Faquir, who transferred to Morehouse in January, had a breakout game, with 14 points, on 6-of-9 shooting, to go along with two assists and two steals.
#Roderick Williams# paced the Tigers with 17 points, three rebounds and four blocked shots. The senior captain, who leads the SIAC in shooting accuracy, hit 5-of-8 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.
#Austin Anderson# was nearly perfect from the floor, hitting 7-of-8 shots for 15 points. #Dana Kendrid# and #Jonathan Tassin# contributed eight points each.
Efe Uwadiea-Odigie led the Panthers in scoring, with 22 points. Claflin fell to 8-12 (7-11 SIAC).
Morehouse will travel to Fort Valley, GA, Tuesday to face the Wildcats. The Tigers beat the Wildcats 82-76, Tuesday.
