Wildcats Tame Tigers

January 31, 2012 -- FORT VALLEY, GA -- Poor shooting and turnovers gave Fort Valley a double digit lead early in the first half and the Wildcats went on to beat the Maroon Tigers, 74-65.

Morehouse committed six turnovers and shot 2-of-8 in the first eight minutes. That futility led to the eight straight loss by the Maroon Tigers, who are mired in the worst losing streak since the 2008-09 season, when they lost nine straight.

Building a first half lead that ballooned to 31-18 at the break, the Wildcats led by double digits for most of the game. Two Maroon Tiger rallies cut the lead to six, late in the second half, but each time the Wildcats matched the Morehouse intensity to preserve the victory.

The Maroon Tigers fell to 3-13 overall and are near the bottom of the SIAC standings at 3-11, in conference play.

Still playing without big man Andrae Nelson, who continues to recover from a concussion, Morehouse had no interior defense against a smallish Wildcats lineup that drove to the basket with little opposition.

Morehouse was also without its third leading scorer, Daniyal Faquir, who was benched by head coach Grady Brewer and remained in Atlanta.

Shawn Allen led all scorers with 25 points, on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and 11-of-15 from the free-throw line. Allen, the team's leading scorer chipped in seven rebounds and four steals.

Cornez Nesbitt hit 5-of-7 shots for 12 points and led all rebounders with nine boards. Mario Farris matched Nesbitt's points, but had to shoot 3-of-13 from the field and 5-of-10 from the line to get them.

Despite out-rebounding the Wildcats, 46-38, the Maroon Tigers failed to help themselves at the charity stripe, shooting 26-of-40.

The Maroon Tigers will travel to Columbia, SC, Thursday, to face the Benedict Tigers, before returning home, Saturday, at 3:30 p.m., to play the Claflin University Panthers.
