Maroon Tigers' Streak Continues

| By: Yusuf Davis
January 21, 2013 – ORANGEBURG, SC – The Maroon Tigers extended their winning streak to eight games, with a 67-64 win over the Claflin University Panthers.

Morehouse's version of the Big Three did most of the scoring. Darrius Williams poured in 19 points, Shawn Allen added 16 points and Andrae Nelson chipped in 11.

After an early exchange of leads, Claflin surged to a 31-25 halftime advantage. The Panthers led for most of the second half until a steal by Jonathan Tassin and a layup by Williams put Morehouse ahead, 62-61, with 2:04 remaining.

From there, the game became a free-throw shooting contest, with Morehouse coming out on top. Despite missing 21 of 37 free throws overall, the Maroon Tigers hit five freebies in the final 1:25.

Allen hit three from the charity stripe, Williams and Tassin sank one each, to secure the win and preserve the streak.

For the second straight game, Williams had game highs in points and rebounds (8). Allen hauled down five rebounds, to go with three steals, two assists and a block. Nelson grabbed seven rebounds and had three blocks.

Tassin finished with seven points and six rebounds. Austin Anderson had a solid game, with five steals, four points, four rebounds and four assists.

Morehouse moved to 9-5 and remains the only unbeaten team in the SIAC.

For the second time this season, Williams has earned the SIAC Player of the Week award, for his 21-point, 7-rebound average in wins over Lane and Kentucky State.

Marcellus Dunn was the big gun for Claflin, scoring 18 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Most of his points came from the free-throw line, where he hit 12 of 13.

Terrance Bowman's 15 points and Michael Jones' 10 bolstered the Panthers, but not enough to keep them from falling to 6-10 (4-4 SIAC).

Morehouse will have perhaps the toughest test of the season, Saturday, at 3:30 p.m., when the Benedict College Tigers visit Forbes Arena. Benedict is the defending SIAC champion and has the second best record in the conference, at 10-6; 6-1.
