Box Score November 21, 2014 – ATLANTA – Fueled by the hot shooting of Michael Scott, the Maroon Tigers bolted to an early lead and cruised to a 72-57 victory over the Fisk University Bulldogs.
In claiming their first win of the season, the Maroon Tigers led wire to wire and improved to 1-2. After building a 33-25 first-half lead, Morehouse poured it on in the second, leading, at one point, by 25 points.
Morehouse used a 49-43 rebounding advantage and a season-best 44 percent shooting percentage, to compensate for a woeful 12 of 25 from the free-throw line. Still it was better than Fisk's 11 of 32 shooting from the charity stripe.
Scott hit 5 of 8 shots, including 4 of 6 three-pointers, and tallied a game-high 15 points. He also handed out four assists, to lead all players.
Tyrone Brown had a big game against an undersized Bulldog team, with his second double-double in three games. Brown tallied 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
The biggest scoring improvement came from Tyrius Walker, a freshman guard who had taken the most shots, with the least success, in four previous games. But today was a different ball game. After a slow first half, in which he missed his only two shots, Walker came out firing in the second half and collected 14 points on a variety of clever inside moves and outside shots.
Walker bolstered his performance with six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Two newcomers had a big impact. Michael Hall, a transfer from Harvard, had a solid game, with eight points and eight rebounds. Miodrag Minic, from Nis, Serbia, by way of Atlanta Metropolitan College, chipped in five points and six rebounds.
Richmond Jackson set the table for the Bulldogs, with 13 points and nine rebounds. Michael Vardaman added 11 points and five rebounds.
The Maroon Tigers will take the week off then travel south to take on Palm Beach Atlantic University, in West Palm Beach, FL, November 30, at 4 p.m.
