Box Score January 14, 2016 – FORT VALLEY, GA – Ayinde Russell had a second big scoring game and fueled Morehouse to a 76-67 win over Fort Valley State Wildcats.
Russell, a freshman from Atlanta, followed up his 27-point scoring outburst, Saturday, with 22 points against the Wildcats. The 6'-3" guard scored 17 of his points in the second half, on 4 of 6 shooting from the floor and 9 of 9 from the free-throw line.
Russell, who has posted the four biggest scoring games of any Maroon Tiger, has improved his average to 11.6. He added four rebounds and three assists.
Most of the Morehouse scoring came from the starters who combined for 69 points. In addition to Russell, three other Maroon Tigers posted double figures.
Javarius Gay also had a big second half, helping the Maroon Tigers battle back from a six-point deficit and outscore the Wildcats 50-35. Gay scored 11 of his 16 points after intermission and chipped in a season-high eight rebounds, to go with four assists.
Coach Grady Brewer returned to the Morehouse bench after a two-game medical absence. Morehouse snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 7-5; 3-4 SIAC.
Tyrone Brown, who missed two games to start 2016 then scored a combined 14 points in the next two games, bounced back with his best game of the season. Brown, a forward from Millen, GA, threw in 13 points and hauled in a team-high nine rebounds. His four blocked shots were a career high.
Robert Askew got back into the double-digit scoring column with 13 points. Askew, the team scoring leader, added four rebounds to his stat line. Michael Scott, the only starter not in double figures, had five points and three rebounds.
Maritea Duke and Dareial Franklin led the Wildcats, with 14 points. Duke had a game-high 11 rebounds, for Fort Valley, which dropped to 2-15; 0-7.
A game against the Stillman College Tigers, which was scheduled to be played, Saturday, in Chicago, as part of an HBCU classic, has been cancelled.
Morehouse will return to Forbes Arena, January 21, to play SIAC West Division rival the Spring Hill College Badgers.
