ATLANTA, Ga. – Morehouse College captured the 2019-20 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Citizenship Award presented by Georgia Power for the second consecutive year.
The SIAC, whose goal is to empower surrounding communities, launched the SIAC Citizenship Award to annually recognize athletic departments that best exemplify the spirit of community and demonstrates values of volunteer community service and engagement.
"It's always nice to be recognized by your peers, but today is special because our scholar-athletes are being reinforced for the second consecutive year by the conference for becoming change agents rather than waiting for someone else to be the change that our community needs," said SAAC Co-Advisor, Kevin Chapman, Jr. "This award highlights a trusting relationship between Morehouse College's Bonner Office of Community Service, athletics department, and the southwest Atlanta community and everyone benefits."
The Maroon Tigers were recognized for their community outreach efforts with Genesis Innovation Academy, Cascade Elementary School, Barack Obama Elementary School, Paul L. Dunbar Elementary School, Hammonds House Museum, Hapeville Charter, among others. These partnerships helped fuse the connection between the campus and its surrounding community.
"I'm very proud to see that our student-athletes continue to lead within the SIAC by standing on the five wells of this great institution through service and programming," said SAAC Co-Advisor, Youdlyne Renard.
These student-athletes also assisted in food distribution, trunk or treat events, a human rights film festival, and much more. SAAC president, Michael Sims was excited to learn of the news and shared that leadership recently met to brainstorm virtual service ideas to present to community partners for the upcoming year.
